Topic: “Mediation as an Effective Tool for Resolving Legal Conflicts”

On April 25, 2021, the Department of Legal Disciplines hosted a regular meeting of the scientific circle “Power of Law”, dedicated to one of the most relevant topics in contemporary legal practice — mediation.

During the session, students and faculty discussed the role of mediation as an alternative method for resolving legal disputes, studying the key principles and stages of the mediation process. Special attention was paid to ethical issues in mediation, as well as the analysis of national and international mediation practices.

Key topics discussed included:

  • What is mediation and its place in the legal system?

  • Advantages of mediation over traditional court proceedings.

  • The mediator as an ethical intermediary: roles and responsibilities.

  • Specifics of mediation in Ukraine and prospects for its development.

The meeting included practical exercises where participants simulated various conflict situations in which a mediator would help parties reach mutually acceptable solutions.

Invited Expert:
The session featured Oleksandr Viktorovych Petrenko, a practicing mediator, lawyer, and mediation trainer, who shared his professional experience and outlined the key stages of mediation in real-life cases.

Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, discuss the potential benefits and challenges of implementing mediation in Ukraine, and expressed interest in studying this field more deeply, particularly in its application to court practice and business conflict resolution.

Summary of the Meeting:
The session provided an excellent opportunity for members of the scientific circle to deepen their knowledge of alternative dispute resolution and learn more about the prospects for the development of mediation as a legal tool in Ukraine.
